Retiring Danville teachers prepare their goodbyes

DANVILLE — School district administrators bid farewell to seven retiring faculty members, with a total of 171 years of district service experience between them.

The outgoing teachers were recognized during the school board’s meeting May 27. The retiring faculty were high school English teacher Deb Burger, with 19 years in the district; fourth-grade teacher Susan Cromley, with 40 years; Danville Primary School gym teacher Deb Gerringer, 35 years; high school biology teacher Donna Wood, seven years; high school family consumer science teacher Beth Mauk, 27-and-a-half years; maintenance secretary Margaret Vacca, 25-and-a-half years, and middle school aide Kathleen Bates, 17 years.

Each teacher was given a Danville Ironmen blanket as a going away present. Superintendent Cheryl Latorre called it a gift for them after “they had warmed the hearts of so many.” Vacca and Gerringer appeared in person at the meeting to represent the retiring teachers.

School board president Allan Schappert referred to the night as “a bittersweet moment.”

“This has been your career, you’ve affected the lives of so many of our students in our community,” he said. “They will always be with you and I’m sure you will always be with them.”

Latorre also shared some words of praise for each outgoing teacher, paying a little extra attention to Gerringer and Vacca. Latorre said she peeked in on Gerringer while she was at the gym the previous week and she “was as vibrant as she was when she was 21 in her first year of teaching. It is amazing to watch her.”

Vacca “has been a godsend to us in our office,” Latorre continued. “I don’t know what we’re going to do without you, Margaret.”
