Police: Woman stole $60 in food from hospital cafe

— DANVILLE — A Bloomsburg woman pleaded guilty to having $60 worth of stolen food from a Geisinger Medical Center café in her walker basket.

Doris M. Kocak, 58, entered the plea to a summary retail theft offense Wednesday before Montour County District Judge Marvin Shrawder. Shrawder ordered her to pay a fine and court costs totaling $251.

Kocak also paid restitution of $60 to Geisinger’s Atrium Café.

Mahoning Township Cpl. Chad Thomas charged Kocak on May 27 after hospital personnel detained the woman.

Scott Barron, a Geisinger food service employee, told police he saw Kocak steal the food from the café in the Hospital for Advanced Medicine.

Barron told police Kocak filled the basket under the seat of the walker with food and left without paying.

Kocak told security officials she took the items because she didn’t have any money and she and her husband had nothing to eat in two days.

This was Kocak’s second retail offense, according to the charges. The initial charges were retail theft and receiving stolen property.

“Geisinger and Cpl. Thomas are willing to cut you a break this time,” Montour County District Attorney Rebecca Warren told Kocak, who was not represented by an attorney at her preliminary hearing.

Kocak, who was using a walker Wednesday, said she had money to reimburse Geisinger because “I didn’t pay my bills.”

Thomas told her if she would be charged with retail theft a third time, it would be considered a felony.

“It will never happen again,” she told the officer.
