Danville Area School District delays concession stand purchase

— DANVILLE — Members of the Danville school board voted to postpone a vote on the purchase of a $5,000 to $6,000 concession stand for the field hockey, baseball and softball fields near Danville Primary School.

While $6,000 was budgeted for the stand, the actual cost would probably come in at around $5,100 to $5,700, according to Danville Superintendent Cheryl Latorre.

Board members wanted additional information from the booster clubs of the sports teams before they decided on the purchase. Board member Joseph Stemm said he in particular was interested in whether or not the booster clubs would help with the purchase of the stand, which is planned to have electricity and a concrete base.

From observing prior concession sales at those fields, Stemm also did not feel those teams brought in enough customers to earn back the $6,000 investment. The earlier sales were done at a table selling chips, candy and soda. Board member Dawn Koons-Gill argued that giving the booster clubs an entire stand with better equipment would allow them to sell more types of snacks and probably increase sales.

Athletic director Ron Kanaskie said he didn’t have any information that could predict concession sales at the area. The field hockey teams would most likely use the field in the fall while the softball and baseball teams would use it in the spring, he said. Kanaskie said he has had no prior problems with different teams sharing concession stands.

“It’s something that’s overly needed,” Kanaskie said. “We need to rely upon revenue that our booster clubs make through concession stand sales. … The amount of money that comes our way from Harrisburg is not the same as it has been in the past.”

School board president Allan Schappert said any sports team that uses the fields in the future should also be permitted to use the concession stand.
