Unemployed welder wins $250,000 a year for life

— SUNBURY — It’s often said that winning a jackpot is a life-altering event, and that was certainly true for Thomas Powell Sr., an unemployed welder from Milton who bought a $10 scratch ticket in January and won $250,000 a year for life, with $5 million guaranteed.

But there were several other Valley players whose lives were undeniably changed by their moment of good fortune.

Here are the biggest January lottery winners in the Valley and what they played.
