Bridging the Gap to hold Valentine's Day craft night

— DANVILLE — Transition students from the Danville school district will host a craft night Thursday at their Bridging the Gap program building.

The craft night will have the students assisting local children in creating candy heart magnets and pins for Valentine’s Day and will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bridging the Gap, located in a back room of the former Danville Elementary School building at 401 E. Front St.

Light refreshments will be served and visitors will have a chance to buy some of the student-made products for sale at Bridging the Gap.

The craft night is a first for Bridging the Gap and the transition program. Its purpose is “to help bring people in the community together from different school levels,” as well as to raise awareness of Bridging the Gap, said Andrea Stine, a life skills support instructor with the district transition program.

Transition students will get the benefit of working with others and making community connections during the craft night, Stine said. “We would like to do this once a month,” she said, though transition program staff wants to see what the turnout is for the first craft night before they plan any more. “We’re looking to bring out awareness, have some fun with the kids and make some connections and friendships,” she said.

People interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP ahead of time via the email address hackeyhousehomemadetreasures@gmail.com.

The Bridging the Gap program started in November, as a way to teach transition students job skills and fundraise. Students create their own products for the store, including jewelry, artwork, greeting cards and snacks, and visitors can buy them with proceeds going to support the transition program’s Hackey House classroom.

Things have been going well at Bridging the Gap since its opening, with the students making a variety of different products, Stine said. “We could use some more community awareness, but the kids are proud of what they make and how much they’ve accomplished.”
