Danville junior Beiter aces regional chemistry exam

DANVILLE — A Danville High School junior was honored at an awards banquet Wednesday after clobbering a regional chemistry exam.

Tristan Beiter was the winner of Exam B of the American Chemical Society High School Chemistry Competition earlier this year. The exam recognizes exceptional accomplishment in the 2013-2014 year of high school chemistry.

Tristan was competing against other students from the Greater Susquehanna chapter of the American Chemistry Society.

He received an award at a special banquet at The Links at Hemlock Creek on May 7.

Exam B is meant for students currently taking their advanced chemistry course.

“I went into it figuring it would be a good experience, regardless of outcome,” Tristan said.

Tristan didn’t do any special studying for the test ahead of time, and he doesn’t believe his fellow Danville students did either. “I just used whatever I had covered in the course of the year,” he said.

As a freshman, Tristan had previously won the competition’s Exam A, designed for first-year chemistry students.

If there’s one thing he was surprised by on Exam B, it was the number of questions related to organic chemistry. “You don’t work with it very much in standard chemistry courses, regardless of level,” he said, as organic chemistry is usually divided into its own set of coursework due to its complexity.

About six other Danville students took the multiple choice test alongside him, which was given at Bloomsburg University. There were about 11 students total taking the exam at Bloomsburg.

One of the things that interests Tristan most about chemistry is its range of applications. “For people who wish to pursue it, it touches on most aspects of life,” he said.

However, he doesn’t plan to continue studying it once he reaches college. His real passion is English.

“I’ve always enjoyed reading and analyzing literature and discussion and writing,” he said.
