25 Danville students busted at post-prom party

DANVILLE —  Danville Area School District officials said they will take action after police file charges against as many as 25 students who attended a post-prom party where a girl reportedly was taken to a hospital for an alcohol overdose.

“The board has been informed. The administration is interviewing students and the school is investigating facts and circumstances,” Danville school board President Allan Schappert said. “The board won’t react without first investigating.”

The girl who was taken to a hospital had a blood alcohol level of more than 0.30 percent, sources said. A person is considered legally intoxicated in Pennsylvania with a blood alcohol level of 0.08.

Danville Superintendent Cheryl Latorre said if students are charged with alcohol-related offenses, it will affect school events in which they are involved, including sports.

State police at Stonington plan to charge about 25 juveniles with underage drinking following the party in Rush Township at 118 Elysburg Road, which is Route 54.

Police were called to the property at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Danville’s junior-senior prom was held Saturday. Danville does not sponsor a post-prom event.

The party took place on property owned by Joe and Maria Harris. Reached Monday, Joe Harris said he didn’t want to make a statement. He said he has contacted an attorney.

Latorre said school district officials spoke with police Monday.

”We’re not sure what happened. We’re trying to find out,” she said.

“Students are being called down to get statements from them. All parents will be contacted,” Latorre said.

High School Principal Lee Gump and Athletic Director Ron Kanaskie questioned the students Monday.

Schappert said he didn’t know if all the underage party-goers were Danville students but “certainly Danville students were involved.”

“We are very glad there were no fatalities and no one seriously physically injured,” he said. “It’s unfortunate if seniors are involved with end-of-the-year events.”
