550 Danville Primary School students christen Kids’ Walk for Diabetes

DANVILLE — The first Kids’ Walk for Diabetes in Danville was successful.

About 550 students of the Danville Primary School participated in the walk Friday on the high school track. The walk was postponed from Thursday because of rain.

Mother Michelle Benjamin suggested the walk to raise awareness and money toward a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

She and her husband, Chris, have a daughter, Amelia, 7, and a son, Ethan, 13,

with Type 1 diabetes.

By Friday afternoon, more than $3,300 had been raised.

Assisting with the walk was Kristine Evina, development coordinator of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Central Pennsylvania. Those contributing received paper sneakers. Benjamin said nearly 150 Paper sneakers will be available the week of May 13 at the school.

Some second-graders decorated their own T-shirts for the walk. Others carried a banner. The walk also benefits the school’s reading program.

To donate to the foundation, the reading program or both call Benjamin, of Danville, at 570-764-6103.
