Montour sheriff Gerringer named president of state association

DANVILLE — Montour County Sheriff Ray Gerringer can add another title to his resume.

On Friday night, he was installed as the new president of the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association for a one-year term. The annual one-week training conference of the association ended Friday.

Conducting his swearing-in was Columbia-Montour Counties President Judge Thomas James Jr.

Other officers were sworn into office by Columbia-Montour Counties Judge Gary Norton during the ceremonies in the Hilton Convention Center in Scranton.

“It’s a coat and tie affair. The bishop from Scranton will be giving the invocation and the blessing and keynote speaker is Attorney General Kathleen Kane,” Gerringer said before his swearing-in.

As president, he said he will run the business of the association, which involves attending meetings in Harrisburg of state House and Senate members on issues relevant to state sheriffs.

The association membership includes 67 sheriffs or one from each county in the state, 67 chief deputy sheriffs, 67 solicitors and between 40,000 and 50,000 associate members from the general public, he said. The associate members support the association.

Gerringer has been a member of the association since 1978 and has served on its executive board since 2005.

The sheriff since 2004, Gerringer has worked for the sheriff’s office since 1978.

He also serves as chief detective for Montour County and as field supervisor of the Northumberland Montour Drug Task Force.
