200 competitors expected to take Chilli Challenge

WASHINGTONVILLE — About 200 people are expected to test their skills in biking, boating and running during the 11th Annual Chilli Challenge.

The event is named for Lake Chillisquaque at the PPL Montour Preserve — the site of the challenge.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The first event begins at 9 a.m., said Montour Area Recreation Commission Director Bob Stoudt.

The first leg of the race is biking for about 20 miles through Anthony and Madison townships.

After that, competitors will paddle about two miles around the lake in “any safe approved watercraft,” said Stoudt, who expects kayaks and some stand-up paddle boards.

The third and final part of the competition will be running along trails at the preserve for slightly more than 4.5 miles.

Participants will accumulate points in the River Towns Race Series. The Chilli Challenge is the next to last race of the 2013 season.

“The Chilli Challenge typically attracts about 35 percent of people more than 50 miles away,” he said.

Winners in individual and team categories will receive trophies.

The winner of the four-person Ironman Team will be awarded the Chilli Cup, which is passed down from year-to-year.

People can register the day of the challenge or at www.chillichallenge.com.
