Crews prepare for work on leaky water valve on Ferry Street

DANVILLE — Borough crews worked Thursday to shut down two valves that have been leaking water at the five-way intersection of Bloom, Walnut and Ferry streets.

Street department and water department employees uncovered a valve on Ferry Street and planned to dig up the other valve on the north side of the intersection. The valves are part of the Ferry Street main, Water Superintendent Brad Horne said.

Shutting down the valves wasn’t expected to cause any disruption of service to customers.

Part of Ferry Street was barricaded during the work.

Horne said after they dug up the valves, they covered them with plates so traffic could resume.

Similar work was to be done on the north side of the intersection near the Cole’s Hardware office building on Ferry Street.

Horne said the affected lines dated to 1975.

The next step will be for contractor Robert C. Young of Bloomsburg to replace the faulty valves with new ones.

Horne said he expects that work to be done at night.

“It’s been a lengthy process,” he said of the leaking that began a week ago at the intersection.

“We’ve been doing everything we can,” Horne said.

He said he has been checking the daily water flows at the water treatment plant and they haven’t increased due to the leakage.

“It’s not a lot of water although it looks like it since it’s lying there,” he said.
