Natural gas well funds will help Montour Area Recreation Commission

DANVILLE — Montour County’s commissioners have decided how they will allocate the $25,000 the county received from natural gas well impact fees.

Commissioner Jerry Ward announced the distribution Tuesday night. He said the money can only be used for parks and recreation.

They gave $15,000 to the Montour Area Recreation Commission, which Ward said handles the bulk of recreation in the county, including maintaining Hess Field.

They approved $1,000 each for the Northern Montour Recreation Association, Zamboni Park, master gardeners, Montour County Sportsmen for Kids, the Danville Area Community Center, Danville borough for Memorial Park and Sunnybrook Park.

They kept $3,000 in reserve for work needed at the county’s Hopewell Park.

Commissioners Chairman Trevor Finn thanked everyone involved with recreation in the county. “They do this for no money whatsoever,” he said.

The commissioners also approved $4.582 from the tourism fund of the Columbia Montour Visitors Bureau to the Montour Area Recreation Commission for Montour County’s share of the North Branch Canal Trail. This is for permits and fees which Montour is splitting with Columbia County. Fees and permits will cost $9,165.
