Riverside council approves removal of sidewalk destroying tree

RIVERSIDE — Borough council members voted to remove a Gearhart Street tree uprooting part of the sidewalk.

The decision was made diromg the council’s meeting Monday. The tree and sidewalk are both within the borough’s right of way. The tree, located outside of 8 Gearhart St., has roots which have been growing under the sidewalk, making it uneven and hazardous to walk across.

A resident at the address, Ms. Arthur Vanderlick, originally informed Riverside police about the tree. Vanderlick, who did not wish to use her first name, said the tree’s growth had become more dangerous recently. She set up warning tape around the tree because she was concerned it might pose a danger to people using the sidewalk.

“I don’t want anybody hurt, especially the kids,” she said.

The council resolved to have the tree removed and restore the area so it will be safe for pedestrians. The sidewalk will be restored at the discretion of the street department.

The council also voted to trim a tree near Brewery Hollow that is leaning and endangering power lines. The tree is located on private property, but the borough voted to trim the limbs near the power line that are within the borough’s right of way.

The cutting in both cases will be done by Northeast Tree Service. Money set aside in the budget for tree trimming will cover both trees, according to council president John Novak.
