Scout fixes up Danville Jubilee Kitchen 'Kids Corner'

DANVILLE — A Buckhorn Boy Scout’s Eagle project helped refurbish and improve the children’s play area of Danville’s Jubilee Kitchen.

Alec Haines, of Buckhorn Troop 50, helped renovate the Jubilee Kitchen’s “Kids Corner,” which is regularly used by families who attend the kitchen’s Saturday meal. The kitchen is located at the Mahoning Presbyterian Church.

Alec, along with about 20 volunteers from his family and Scout troop, constructed three bookshelves for the Kids Corner, resurfaced and repainted a table used in the room and purchased several arts and crafts supplies.

A lot of the children who attend Saturday’s free meal are from needy families, Alec said. The Kids Corner “gives them something to entertain them the short period of time they’re there.”

Work on the Kids Corner wrapped up about six weeks ago, according to Linda Pritchard, director of the Jubilee Kitchen.

“The kids love it,” she said of the refurbished room. “Things were held in boxes and baskets (before), and it just looked so much nicer with the shelving in there.”

Before the bookshelves were added to the room Alec spent about a month planning out the project, including measuring the space available at the Kids Corner, buying building supplies and getting it approved by the Columbia-Montour Boy Scout Council.

The planning and approval process was the most time consuming part of the project.

“Usually whenever you take part in things, you think about what you have to do and not all the planning that goes on behind the scenes,” he said. “A lot of people think you can throw two boards together and end up with something, but it takes a lot of time.”

Setting up the bookshelves and tables only took a day.

The Jubilee Kitchen will go on its summer hiatus over the summer, closing from July to the first week of September, Pritchard said.
