‘Gypsy’ auditions start Monday

DANVILLE — RiverStage Community Theatre is widening its horizons to include auditions and a performance in Danville.

More than 42 roles are available for singers, dancers and non-singing parts as well in “Gypsy.”

Auditions will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the Danville Middle School, 120 Northumberland St. Auditions for non-singers will be from 6 to 7 both nights and from 7 to 9 for singers both nights.

Kids can audition during any time slot with the theater group recommending RSVP for auditions are recommended through the group’s contact form on its website at www.riverstagetheatre.org or emailing info@riverstagetheatre.org.

Performances will be July 11, 12 and 13 in the Danville school.

The show includes a large cast with roles for men and women of all ages and children ages 7 to 12. There are speaking roles along with non-speaking roles,

Many dancers, high school age and older, are also needed.

Jennifer Wakeman, of Lewisburg, is serving as director.

This will be the third production of the theater group directed by Wakeman.

“We need actors, kids who can dance, adults who can walk on and off stage — you name it we need it,” she said.

“‘Gypsy’ literally has something for everyone who wants to be on stage. I hope we get a great turnout for auditions,” she said.

“Gypsy” will be the group’s last show of this season and its 22nd show.

In the past, RiverStage Community Theatre has presented shows in Lewisburg, Milton, Bloomsburg, Shamokin and Sunbury.

The group presented its first show in 2012 and previously was Milton Area Community Theatre which reorganized in 2011.

“The first play I directed was Over the River and Through the Woods at the Campus Theater and it was so well-received that we branched out into more plays,” Wakeman said of the organization previously doing musicals.

Adults and children ages 13 and older will be asked to read a short scene provided at the audition. Singers should bring approximately one verse, or similar length, of a show tune or other piece. A piano accompanist will be provided or they can sing a-cappella.

Roles will be offered immediately after the conclusion of auditions and vocal rehearsals will begin the week of May 19 and regular rehearsals will start in June.
