Gronsky dancers ready for annual holiday show

DANVILLE — Madelyn and Ava Rarig talk about dancing all the time.

“They practice at home,” said their mother, Kristen Rarig, of Danville.

Ava, 3, is in her first year of ballet at Karen Gronsky School of Dance in Danville. A student for quite a few years, 11-year-old Madelyn does lyrical dance.

The Dec. 8 show “Crazy Christmas at the Movies” will be Ava’s first.

A few hundred students will participate in performances beginning at 2 p.m. in the Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall, Bloomsburg University. Tickets, available at the studio at 122 Center St., are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Kristen Rarig, who took dance when she was a child, said it helps with “confidence and you form lasting friendships.”

Also debuting for the first time on stage will be Lily Crumb, 3, of the Danville area.

Lily has been taking ballet lessons from Gronsky since September.

“She looks forward to coming every Monday. She loves the dances and she loves Miss Karen,” her mother, Heather Crumb, said. Lily also practices at home.

The youngest ballet dancers — ages 3 through 5 — can be expected to arrive on stage in a sleigh pulled by Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

At least 21 classes will participate along with some “surprise dancing dads,” said Gronsky, who has been holding a holiday show for more than 20 years.

Years ago, the show was staged at Danville Middle School.

Students will show their moves in tap, hip hop, lyrical, jazz, classical ballet, pre-ballet and pointe ballet.

Assisting Gronsky with the show are Melissa Patterson, Katie Mazol, Alex Kijek and Hidi Horikoshi.

“This a fun, happy-spirited show,” Gronsky said of performances to “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Carol of the Bells” and “fun dances by Justin Timberlake.”

They will also dance to music from movies including “Home Alone,” “Polar Express” and “The Great Gatsby.”

Gronsky has been working on the show since September.
