Elks shopping event funds free books for Imagination Library

DANVILLE — A fundraiser Tuesday at the Danville Elks will provide free books for children across six counties.

The United Way Women’s Leadership Council of the Susquehanna River Region is holding the fundraiser shopping event, Shop for Early Childhood Literacy, to benefit Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in the Susquehanna River Valley. It will take place at the Elks building at 1240 Montour Boulevard from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and feature more than 20 vendors, including Tastefully Simple, Thirty-One, Lia Sophia, The Pampered Chef, Mary Kay and more. Gift wrapping will also be available.

The cost to attend is $30 per person and registration can be done online at www.pawlc.weebly.com or at the door on the day of the event. Admission will include hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and door prizes and will sponsor one child’s Imagination Library membership for 6 months.

“The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is an initiative that allows children under the age of 5 to receive a free book each month,” said Keri Albright, president and CEO of the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way. About half of the money used from each ticket will go toward supporting a child in the program for about six months, she said.

The Imagination Library provides books to 500 children throughout Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Union, Columbia and Lycoming counties. Of those children, 249 come from Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.

The program supplies books every month to children between the ages of 1 and 5.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a national organization brought to the Susquehanna Valley region this past September by the valley’s United Way Women’s Leadership Council.

The program is open to any family that wants to join and helps a lot of needy families educate their children, Albright said. “It helps kids get ready for school and improve their literacy,” she said.
