Montour County payroll company hacked

DANVILLE — Montour County employees’ identities may have been compromised after its payroll company’s computer system was hacked.

Paytime Inc., of Mechanicsburg, notified Montour County officials the end of April it was aware its system had been compromised on April 7. County officials passed the information onto the county’s approximately 120 employees, Chief Clerk Holly Brandon said Thursday.

The company also handles payroll for Snyder County.

No problems have been reported by employees since then, Brandon said.

Paytime, which manages payroll for 180,000 individuals, will provide a free year of credit monitoring for each employee and has taken out a $1 million insurance policy on every person in case of fraud, Brandon said.

“We advised our employees to register with Equifax. That is linked to their Social Security number,” she said. At Equifax they can be notified of any attempted activity related to their Social Security Number.

“Once we found out the information had been viewed, we immediately let our employees know so they could take whatever steps necessary to make sure everybody was as protected as they can be,” she said.

Montour County received an update late Wednesday afternoon that the company had shut down and rebuilt its client service center. Forensic experts have tested the new system for vulnerabilities. The company is working with law enforcement, and state and federal officials, she said.

“Ironically, we previously were with another payroll company that was hacked last year,” Brandon said.

Montour County has been a Paytime client since June 2012.
