Riverside takes action against blighted properties

RIVERSIDE — An owner of a blighted property within the borough has submitted an asbestos inspection contract required to move ahead with demolitions.

The owner of 101 Elysburg Road reported a small amount of asbestos found within the property, a former soap factory, to Riverside codes inspector Jackie Hart.

“It’s a very minimal amount, but it is of course very heavily policed,” she said of the asbestos. The material will be removed soon by Seitz Brothers technicians.

Hart said she would rather not publish the name of the property owner, who has been cooperative with the borough in improving the site.

Another blighted property, 302 Gearhart Street, is in violation of several property maintenance codes due to rotting porch posts and a partially collapsed roof. Hart said part of the roof had fallen on a shed-like accessory building located on the same property. Citations will be filed against the property owner, Shirley O’Neal, Hart said.

The borough is also attempting to learn the identity of the current owner of 305 Third Street. The property had belonged to Elena Hartman, who made substantial progress and was almost off the list of blighted properties, Hart said. However, during Hart’s April inspection of Riverside she saw there was siding missing from the house and attempted to contact Hartman. Hart’s mailings were returned to her undelivered.

The borough solicitor is currently investigating the matter, Hart said.
