Danville directors defer raises for administrators

DANVILLE — Members of the Danville school board voted to defer a series of pay increases for several district administrators and employees.

The 24 employees include administrators and school principals hired under Act 93, the district business manager, administrative assistants and three salaried employees who are not part of a district bargaining group.

The vote was deferred because the board members wanted more time to discuss the raises, according to board president Allan Schappert. With only five of the nine board members in attendance at the July 8 meeting, the board wanted to wait until more members were present to discuss the raises in executive session and to vote on the matter.

While there were a few additional questions, “none of it related to the outstanding performance our administrative folks have done the last year,” Schappert said. There was absolutely no question that the staff up for raises deserved an increase.

The board hopes to discuss the matter further at the executive session of their Aug. 8 meeting. Schappert was not certain when the actual vote would take place, but it may be the following meeting on Aug. 22.

The 14 Act 93 employees were under contract to receive a raise between zero and three percent. The other 10 employees were not under the same yearly contract as the Act 93 employees but their raises were usually “fairly consistent” with those of the other employees, Schappert said.

Some may question the board voting on pay increases for administrators when there is still an open teacher’s contract to negotiate, Schappert said. The two contracts “are two separate animals,” he said, each with their own policies and procedures. “One does not have a bearing on the other.”

Also deferred was a vote on whether to approve a stipend of $2,000 for three administrative assistants, in addition to their normal pay. This stipend, which had been given last year as well, was meant to cover additional duties performed by the assistants following the downsizing of staff in the administrative building, Schappert said.
