Bunnies recovering after attack at Danville High School football game

DANVILLE — Three wild baby bunnies are eating and drinking after being attacked during a football game in Danville.

Mackenzie Wertman, a Danville High School junior, saw boys kicking the bunnies Friday night.

Officials suspect the youths were from Shamokin. Danville played Shamokin Friday night at home.

“She was looking for someone to take them and I offered to try it,” said Dawn Koons-Gill.

So far, she said, the rabbits have been doing great. One was injured and she isn’t sure how that bunny will fare.

She has been feeding them kitten milk replacer three times a day and keeping them under a heat lamp. They are also eating clover.

She checked online and estimates they are 14 to 21 days old.

The bunnies don’t appear to be as scared as they had been, she said.

Koons-Gill, a Danville school board member, said Danville Superintendent Cheryl Latorre contacted the Shamokin superintendent in order to obtain more information. A message was left for Latorre.

Danville police said the incident is being handled by school officials.
