County, Jaws end recycling deal

— DANVILLE — Montour County has hired a new recycling coordinator which is expected to save taxpayers money.

Ted Heaps Container Service, of Millville, will charge the county $3,500 a year to collect recyclables compared with the previous recycling coordinator, Jaws of Danville, charging $5,000 per year, Commissioner Jerry Ward said at Tuesday night’s commissioners meeting.

The commissioners accepted a resignation submitted by Jaws and named Heaps as the new coordinator.

The county’s share will be matched by the state for a total of $7,000 to be paid to the Heaps firm for the year.

The new service is expected to start Feb. 1.

Ward said Heaps will place containers in Valley and Anthony townships, where recycling has been conducted in the past, but volunteers will no longer be needed because the containers will remain there all the time.

People won’t have to separate the recyclables. The Heaps company will separate them, he said.

A recycling container will be placed outside the courthouse.

Heaps will work with the Danville Area School District on where the district wants recycling containers placed, Ward said.

“If there is a good turnout, Heaps will add to this,” Ward said of the number of containers provided.

He said the Heaps firm plans to increase the types of items accepted for recycling.
