Derry Township crash victim suffered fatal heart attack

DANVILLE — A man suffered a fatal heart attack while driving Tuesday afternoon in Derry Township, police said.

James William, 74, of Milton, was pronounced dead at about 5:15 p.m. due to cardiac arrest, Tpr. Garrett R. Marvich, of state police at Milton, reported.

William was traveling north on Strawberry Ridge Road north of Washingtonville at about 4:15 p.m. He drove across the southbound lane of travel and into a ditch off the west side of the road, police said.

His vehicle struck and sheered off a utility pole and came to rest facing north in the ditch, police said.

The accident scene was about a half-mile north of Gray Road.

William was freed from his vehicle by the Valley Township Fire Department.

William was reported to be unresponsive and was transported to Geisinger Medical Center.

It was determined William suffered a heart attack while driving, which forced his vehicle off the road, Marvich’s report said.

The Danville Ambulance Service transported him to the hospital.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn could not be reached for information on the cause of death.
