New members of The Community Singers ready for 'Spring Sing'

RIVERSIDE — Merry Acor, of Buckhorn, joined The Community Singers at the urging of director John Collins III.

She knows Collins from playing with the Catawissa Military Band and the Danville Community Band. She has been a member of the Singers since Christmas.

“I like it. It’s just fun,” she said. “John makes it fun.”

Acor also plays flute and piccolo.

The singers’ free concert Monday will be the first concert for member Haley Fletcher, of Danville. “My aunt was bugging me so a friend (Amanda Shultz, of Danville) and I joined,” Fletcher said.

“Everyone is light and cheery,” she said of the group of about 50 singers.

They will present their “Spring Sing” concert at 7 p.m. Monday in St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, 240 Sunbury Road, where they have been rehearsing since February. The singers do a concert in the spring and for Christmas.

Shirley Wetzel, of Riverside, has been a member since 1980. The Riverside resident said the group was founded in 1960.

Collins has been director since 2003. “He’s the best,” she said.

“It’s a good service for the community,” said member Charlie Dark, of Riverside, who was rehearsing a solo recently with the group. A member since 1986, he also sings with the Susquehanna Valley Chorale.

Sister Maria Theresa, of Danville, joined in 1981 because she enjoys singing. “It’s a wonderful group. Everyone encourages each other. It’s a wonderful blend of voices,” she said.

Accompanists for the concert will include Gail Garman and Beverly Reich on piano, Greg Benshoff playing drums and Terri Choyko on base guitar.

They will present 12 numbers including “Heritage Medley,” “Look to the Day,” “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “The Wind Beneath My Wings,” “River Songs” and “Talk to the Animals” from “Doctor Dolittle.”

Garman also serves as president of the community band where she plays bells.

The band will present its free annual spring concert “Forty-four years of Music” at 7 p.m. May 16 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Market Street, Danville. Collins also directs the band.
