Woman admits taking more than $84,000

DANVILLE – A Danville woman pleaded guilty Friday to theft of $84,047 from the ATM she was to fill daily at the Valley Township store where she worked.

Tracy Jane Truesell, 51, of 712 E. Front St., entered the plea before Montour County Judge Gary Norton.

She faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a $25,000 fine.

Truesell wasn’t represented by an attorney. She told Norton she couldn’t afford a lawyer and didn’t qualify for representation by a public defender.

Free on bail, Truesell was charged with stealing money from her employer from February 2010 through March 2013.

State police at Milton charged Truesell with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, theft by deception, receiving stolen property, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received, two counts of forgery, tampering with records and misapplication of entrusted property.

Truesell was responsible for receipts and records of daily money collected and receipts and records of money deposited in the ATM at the Fuel Station at 5 McCracken Road in Valley Township. Leighow Oil Co. owns the business which also houses a Subway restaurant.

An initial audit by controller Holly McWilliams found a difference of $6,040 between Nov. 1, 2010, and Nov. 30, 2010. On further examination of additional receipts and spreadsheets, she found an unaccounted amount in excess of $83,000.

She notified owner Glen Leighow and manager Gerald Pennypacker. Police were contacted April 1.

McWilliams told police Truesell was the sole key holder of the ATM and responsible for depositing money in the ATM and maintaining deposit reports.
