Danville Spring Fling, River Town Marathons have $500K impact

DANVILLE — The combined economic impact of Danville’s Spring Fling and the River Towns Marathon and Half Marathon conservatively has been estimated to be more than $500,000.

The Bloomsburg University Center for Community Research and Consulting estimated the one-day direct economic impact of the May Spring Fling at $262,000 of which more than $124,000 remained in Montour County.

Its total impact including direct, indirect and induced spending was estimated to be as much as $433,000 by the center with more than $205,000 remaining in Montour County.

Spring Fling sponsor, the Danville Business Alliance, commissioned the survey by the university center to assess the event’s strengths, weaknesses, areas of potential improvement and its economic impact, Alliance Executive Director Jim Wilson wrote in his quarterly report to Danville Borough Council covering April 1 through June 30.

Montour Area Recreation Commission, which sponsors the marathon and half marathon, calculated the direct economic impact of the events to be $65,500 and their total impact including direct, indirect and induced spending estimated at more than $108,000.

The Spring Fling attracted more than 200 vendors and what is believed to be a record number of visitors, according to Wilson.
