More free money for those Valley residents pursuing higher education. Applications are now available for Central Susquehanna Community Foundation scholarship awards for the 2013-14 academic year.

The group is making area-specific awards to certain school districts, but welcomes high school seniors, undergraduate students and non-traditional students residing those areas to apply; submission deadline is April 10, 10 p.m., and all applications will be done online.

Berwick Health and Wellness Fund - Health Profession Scholarships: This $1,000 award is open to students residing in the service area or attending  Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech who will take part in a two- or four-year program for a health profession or one- or two-year certification program. Such careers range from vocational nursing and dental assistant, to health education, to dentistry and medicine.

Walter and Florence Vorbleski Award: This award provides one-year awards of $500 to $1,000 to students residing in the Berwick Health and Wellness Fund area, who will major in pre-med, nursing, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or surgical technician.

William S. and Virginia L. Hartman Family Scholarship: Warrior Run High School seniors attending the Pennsylvania State University are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Special consideration will go to students who study agriculture or education, have a high degree of academic achievement and community involvement, and are the first in their immediate family to attend a bachelor's program. One year scholarship award is $2,100.

Sunbury Area Community Foundation - Sunbury Area Health Fund, Nursing and Allied Health Scholarships: This scholarship is for students who reside in the Shikellamy, Selinsgrove or Line Mountain school districts and will major in a health profession in an undergraduate, graduate or certification program. Students at any phase in their post-secondary education can apply. Scholarship amounts will be determined on an individual basis.

Selinsgrove Area Community Foundation - John A. Bolig Seals Alumni Scholarship: Available to high school seniors or alumni of the Selinsgrove School District enrolled in a post-secondary program at an institution of higher education or technical school. Special consideration for students pursuing a technical career, including heating and plumbing. Scholarship is for one year at approximately $1,400.

    HARRISBURG – The State Board of Education today voted to adopt final-form regulations to amend  the Pennsylvania Education Code, putting into place the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards that requires students to demonstrate proficiency on a Keystone Exam or comparable exam in order to graduate high school.

    The Danville school board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, at the Danville High School to review fact-finding results from their negotiations with the district’s teacher’s union. The state-appointed fact finder has drafted a report with recommendations for both sides on reaching a settlement.

    DANVILLE – What did Matt Bloom think about his students singling him out to wear a pink wig and dye his beard pink?

    “It was fun,” said Bloom, who teaches English at Danville High School. He was chosen by his students to wear the wig and dye as part of “Pink Shirt Day” on Feb. 27, which raises awareness of bullying.

    “I’m just happy to support the kids,” he said. “A couple laughs at my expense, it’s definitely worth it for the kids.”
