Lewisburg rallies past Montoursville in HAC-II

MONTOURSVILLE — Lewisburg knew that Montoursville was playing with tight ends on the offensive line. It was what was discussed in the locker room at halftime and Green Dragons coach Jeremy Winn knew that in order to get to the quarterback, they would have to blitz from outside of the tight end.

So with the game clock just inside of the two-minute mark in the fourth quarter and Montoursville on its own 29, Brandon Smith and the Lewisburg defense knew that they needed to get to Warriors quarterback Griffin Dunne.

That’s when Kyle Palmer came free off the right tackle and sacked Dunne for a 6-yard loss on a huge fourth-and-4 play.

The play worked just how Winn and Lewisburg thought it would and the turnover on downs sealed the 27-22 win for Lewisburg at Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

While the Green Dragons (5-1, 2-1 HAC-II) used a huge third quarter to take their first lead of the game, it was Lewisburg’s first score to close out the second quarter with six seconds remaining that swung the momentum against Montoursville (4-2, 2-2 HAC-II).

It was quarterback Nick Costagliola who ran it in from 13 yards out to make it a 16-6 game. From there, Lewisburg opened the third quarter by rattling off  21 unanswered points. On the ground, Smith and Costagliola combined to rush for 114 yards — 62 from Smith — and combined for three rushing scores.

Costagliola was effective through the air for the Green Dragons, throwing for 174 yards on 15 completions, including a slant pass to start the third quarter to Drew Newcomb that went 76 yards untouched for a touchdown to make it a three-point game.

Dunne was able to keep Montoursville’s offense clicking throughout the game by throwing for 149 yards, including a touchdown pass late in the third quarter to Matt Krezmer for the final score.

The Warriors opened with a 16-0 lead thanks to Dunne rushing it in and throwing a 7-yard slant pass to Cameron Karschner in the first half.
