Tilford makes return to Lewisburg

— LEWISBURG — Both Lewisburg coach Jeremy Winn and Shikellamy coach Todd Tilford have bigger concerns than it being Tilford’s first game back at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

Friday night’s Heartland Athletic Conference crossover game between the Green Dragons and the Braves will be another chance for both coaches to get a read on teams that haven’t quite hit on all cylinders yet.

“I think we’re headed in the right directions,” Winn said. “But we certainly have things to fix and we still have to get better at the things we are doing well.”

It looks like the Green Dragons righted the ship after a 42-7 victory over Hughesville last Friday night. Some of the concerns were about the offensive line and the Green Dragons had a running back  emerge after a loss to Mount Carmel in week 2.

“I thought we were able to run the ball pretty well,” Winn said. “It was something we wanted to make sure we got better at.”

Lewisburg looks to have found its running game in junior fullback Logan Aikey, who ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

“Lewisburg made some position changes and Aikey had real good game at fullback,” Tilford said.

However, there were certainly still some issues for the Green Dragons in the game. They were hit by three 15-yard penalties and still lost a fumble.

I’m still really disappointed in our penalties and we had another turnover. We have to do better,” Winn said. “That’s going to cost us again. It almost cost us in week one and it was a big factor in our loss to Mount Carmel.”

Shikellamy is also certainly feeling better about itself as well. The Braves upset rival Selinsgrove 14-7 after beginning the season 0-2.

Winn wasn’t surprised the Braves knocked off the Seals.

“I thought they were a good football team. They have a lot of good athletes between (Dwayne) Pepper, (Ryan) Wary and (Garrett) Kemberling,” Winn said. “They played better up front (against Selinsgrove).”

After two weeks of hurting itself with mistakes, Shikellamy returned an interception for a touchdown against the Seals and limited its own miscues.

“We were really proud of the kids and the way they played with intensity last week,” Tilford said. “We had our backs against the wall in desperation mode and the kids responded against a real good Selinsgrove team.”

Like the Green Dragons, though, the Braves haven’t solved all their problems. They’ve only scored three offensive touchdowns this season, despite some impressive yardage.

“We still need to finish drives offensively. We’ve moved the ball nicely all three weeks,” Tilford said. “We’ve got to cut out the penalties and the negative plays.”
