Morris leads Line Mountain past Newport

JERSEY SHORE — Codi Morris accounted for four touchdowns in his first varsity start at quarterback and Line Mountain wasn’t a very gracious host to former coach Todd Rothermel’s new squad, Newport, on Friday night in Tri-Valley League football action.

Morris ran for 123 yards and three scores, while throwing for another touchdown as the Eagles rolled to a 40-14 victory at Glenn Ressler Field at Eagles Stadium, bouncing back from their first loss of the season.

Line Mountain (4-1 overall, 3-1 TVL) took a 40-0 advantage before Newport (1-4, 1-3) scored two late touchdowns.

The Eagles took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Morris got things started with a seven-yard TD run before finding Erik Smeltz with a 13-yard TD pass.

In the second quarter, Line Mountain added three more scores. Morris had scoring runs of three and five yards, sandwiched around Dillan Michael’s five-yard scoring scamper. Michael capped the Line Mountain scoring with 29-yard TD run in the third quarter. Michael had 82 yards on the ground as the Eagles finished the game with 269 yards on 40 carries. Michael now has 10 rushing touchdowns on the season, tied for tops in the area with Mount Carmel’s Luke Klingerman.
