Senior Prom in the works for RiverWoods
Now this is what I call a senior prom. Five students from Mifflinburg Area High School are coordinating a dance and dinner for senior citizens in Lewisburg. Freshman Colbey Russell said an event the students are calling “The Senior Prom” is being planned for RiverWoods residents. A dinner will be held before the dance, and Russell promises that surprises are in store for attendees. “The reason we are putting together this service project is to show how one can touch another person’s life,” Russell said in an e-mail. “I also hope that this will inspire many others to join and help us give back to the community.” The prom is scheduled for May 18. -- The Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority welcomes a new member to its team. Caley Mincemoyer has been appointed as recreation coordinator for the organization. Jim Buck, LARA board member, said Mincemoyer’s duties will include managing the community pool in the St. Mary Street park and the LARA Gymnastic Center. Mincemoyer is a graduate of Lock Haven University with a degree in parks and recreation. Her start date is Monday. -- Linntown Elementary School Principal Paula Reber said fourth-grade teachers at the school are planning a Pennsylvania History Day for the students on Friday. Teacher Karen Bennett said a variety of presenters will be featured, including people portraying a Civil War general, Ben Franklin and a Susquehanna river man and a representative from the Union County Historical Society. Pennsylvania songs, dances, games, stories and art will be discussed. She said each student has researched a person in history and created an artifact from that person’s life. The artifacts and information will be displayed in the school’s “artifact museum,” which is in the fourth-grade classrooms. -- Lewisburg’s Seventh Street project is nearing completion. Borough Manager Chad Smith said that as of Tuesday, the contractor began milling in preparation for paving. “We are still confident the entire project will be substantially complete by May 15, which includes all major work,” he said. The street remains closed and will continue to be for the next two weeks on an as-needed basis. He said paving is slated to start by the end of the week, and as weather permits, the crews will get in and get out. “We will try to pave block by block,” he said, “and as it’s completed, we will certainly open up for traffic.” The next big project will be on St. Paul Street, starting June 1. Smith said that project will be a total street reconstruction with new curbs from North 10th Street to North 12th Street. It’s a two-phase project, with the second phase to be done next year from North 12th Street to North 15th Street. -- Union County is holding a tire and textile recycling event, rain or shine, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 to noon Saturday at the East Buffalo Township Recycling Center, Fairground Road. Township Supervisor Lawson Fetterman said $2 per tire will be collected, and tires must be 22 1/2 inches or less. There is a limit of 20 tires per vehicle. Also accepted will be bed and household linens, clothing, belts, curtains, shoes, fabrics, jewelry, perfumes, cosmetics, purses and towels. The service is being provided by the American Rescue Workers. Information is available by calling the recycling hotline at 524-9300. n Gina Morton covers East Buffalo, Gregg, Union and White Deer townships in eastern Union County; and Lewisburg Borough.
