Guess Who! Week 21!

— Most of those 2 million miles behind the wheel were unremarkable, as was his crossing lines into 38 different states in 47 years. Sure, this retired Sunbury area trucker gave a 30-mile lift to a father whose family was stranded in middle of nowhere in New Mexico. “He was out there going for ride with kids, and he did not remember to put gas in the car.” Sure, he drove that big rig through snowstorms too many to remember. But it’s that one trip from Philadelphia to Buffalo that he can’t get out of his mind. “Just going out with four pallets on a truck that could hold 20 was very unusual,” the native of Philadelphia says. He knew those four pallets were stacked with lobsters. What he did not know — after the four-hour drive and only as the crustaceans were being transferred from Buffalo into Canada: “They were worth more than $125,000. I saw the export papers.” That was something to mull over during those sometimes 15-hour stretches of driving alone. “I used to do a lot of thinking (behind the wheel),” he said. “One of the problems is, (driving) gets kind of automatic. But you have to keep a good portion of your mind on the road. In the middle of the night, your mind can sometimes just start wandering.”

To his favorite album: “Simon and Garfunkle’s ‘Bridge over Troubled Water.’’’

To his favorite author: “David Balducci.”

Of the sport he never got a chance to master: “I wish I could have tried ice hockey. I love the game. It is my favorite sport to watch right now. I would have loved to try it when I was younger.”

To his favorite movie: “‘Top Gun.’”

Of that dream muscle car: “A Pontiac Grand Prix, from the early 1970s. I had a ’73 that I loved.”

Sometimes those late-night thoughts would be about “What you have to do when you get home,” he says.

Home.

To his favorite place on Earth.

Pennsylvania.

Where he now plays a key role in Valley politics and serves as a volunteer fireman.

“It’s the most beautiful state there is,” he says. “ It has a good selection of mountain ranges and just the scenic beauty of it.”

There he was, this 66-year-old grandfather of four, hanging 200 feet above the jungle canopy, under which may have been slithering boa constrictors, Burmese pythons or the odd tarantula. “If I fell down,” this resident of Montour County says, “I’m in there dealing with bugs and snakes and whatever.” His goal earlier this month was to hang on
