The Daily Item
MILTON — The Rockwell Retirement Center is launching a walking club, a move prompted by National Diabetes Month as a way to help residents remain active.
The kickoff of the club will happen in December with a Holiday Scavenger Hunt that will likely take residents throughout the building to find items on a list.
Each resident who decides to participate in the Walking Club will receive a pedometer to record the amount of steps taken weekly to be charted to compete against fellow residents.
“With long hallways at Rockwell, there is plenty of “track” for walking for the residents on a daily basis,” says Tessa Bieber, Director of Marketing & Admissions. “We want to encourage people who are active or wish to be active to use a resource that is readily available without having to go outside especially during the winter months.”
Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 79 million Americans who have prediabetes are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, according to the National Diabetes Association.
