ATHENS -- Cynthia Adams says the one thing on her mind for the 800-meter run is that she just wants to beat Kalyn Fisher.
"I never beat her," the Southern Columbia junior said Saturday after finishing second to Lewisburg's Fisher but still earning a berth in next weekend's state championship meet in Shippensburg.
Maybe not. But the two runners did finish in a tie for the district title in last year's race at Shikellamy High School.
In Saturday's district meet at Athens High School, Adams broke the meet record with a time of 2 minutes, 17.12 seconds. It still was not good enough.
This time, for the third time in as many weeks, Fisher beat Adams in the 800, running a 2:14.3.
With Fisher in front of her, Adams had a more dire concern, as Towanda's Stephanie Miller was threatening to steal her qualifying position.
"I knew Towanda was right by me. I felt her real close on this (final) corner. I just said to myself, If you want this, you've got to go,' and I gave it all I had and luckily it was enough," Adams said.
But, as she approached the finish line, Fisher knew she couldn't let up.
"Usually, when you're running you can tell when someone's right behind you because of the footsteps and I could still hear her today, so it always makes me run faster when someone is there," Fisher said.
"(The race) felt really fast. The first lap was really fast and then the wind was hard going into the second lap," she said. "But I had someone pushing me to the end, so that was good."
Meanwhile, things were good once again for the Lewisburg team, which dominated the meet to win its 10th consecutive district team title, scoring 139 points to runner-up Montoursville's 62.
The Green Dragons won all three relays, including an incredibly quick 3,200, a race which was so fast, the top seven teams met the state qualifying standard and advanced to Shippensburg.
Sophia Ziemian won in a season-best 10:56.24, her teammate, Kiah Hardcastle, was second in 11:05.77; Caitlin Cavanaugh, Danville, was third in 11:01.14; and Milton's Heidi Shuck qualified with a seventh-place finish in 11:31.86.
Ziemian said, "I was surprised. That's a lot for a single district. I didn't know it was that fast of a race, but I guess we were moving."
She said she was just trying to run under 11 again. And she had to hold off her teammate, Hardcastle, for the win.
