She's not in Kansas anymore
When newly minted attorney Laurie Pickel recently unloaded her car, her new colleague, Michael Dennehy, joked, “I guess you’re not in Kansas anymore.” In fact, he was right. Pickel, who graduated from Washburn University School of Law in Kansas, was sworn into the Columbia-Montour Bar Association on Tuesday by Columbia-Montour President Judge Scott W. Naus at the Montour County Courthouse, Danville. Pickel, of Catawissa, will be joining the Marks, McLaughlin and Dennehy law firm in Danville. Attorneys Joe McLaughlin, Robert Marks Jr., Robert Marks Sr. and Dennehy attended the swearing-in ceremony. -- Riverside police have been busy, according to Police Chief Ike Ramer’s monthly report for April. Ramer said the department responded to 89 requests for assistance, issued 27 traffic citations and investigated three criminal complaints. Police also cited residents for nine burning ordinance and two junk vehicle ordinance violations, he reported. -- Several locals recently shared the same movie screen as Sienna Miller and Jessica Biel, as well as Danny Glover and David Arquette, during the Charleston International Film Festival, which featured the premiere of the locally filmed movie “Left/Right,” written and produced by Danville natives Matt and Todd Wolfe. Their film garnered two awards with Matt Wolfe being named best actor and the brother duo taking home the best emerging filmmaker award. The film will be shown at the Little Rock Film Festival later this month. -- The Southside Fire Company, Riverside, is taking a unique approach to connecting with the community, as well as finding ways to improve its service — by issuing comment cards to residents they help in various ways. Recent assistance calls for pumping water out of basements and an electrical fire involving a car have yielded the fire company’s first critiques, according to Fire Chief Nick Fowler. The hope, he says, is to have more residents comment about the fire service so the company can make improvements in the way it responds, reacts and performs its duties. Cleo Weader responded regarding her car fire call on March 6: “Very impressive, wow. Thank you, thank you.” Shirley Lumpkin was thrilled about the way the fire company helped remedy her flooded basement March 5, saying, “When water was coming in my basement faster than it could be pumped out, the fire department came promptly both times I called them.” She said the volunteer firefighters even rearranged all of her pumps so they would work better in the future. Jeff Jones was impressed with the way the fire company responded to his flooded basement March 6, saying, “They were absolutely great and wonderful.” -- Jaime North covers Anthony, Cooper, Derry, Liberty, Limestone, Mahoning, Mayberry, Valley and West Hemlock townships and Danville and Washingtonville boroughs in Montour County and Riverside Borough and Rush Township in Northumberland County.
