Slifer History Camp

LEWISBURG — History Camp for children ages 7-12 will begin with a Civil War encampment held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 June 15 at Slifer House Museum, 80 Magnolia Drive.

Encampment will be taught by several dozen reenactors, including Battery B, Third Pa. Light Artillery, who will teach children about daily life of soldiers during the Civil War. Children will learn how to drill as a unit and all about medicine, food, dances, religion, and games of the war. Encampment is $30.

Two daily workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. June 17-21. Workshops are $15 per two-hour session and include: the art of wool; hand weaving; crafts of the Victorian era; famous Pennsylvania inventors and their inventions; Victorian era children’s games; life as a Civil War soldier; daily essentials: skills, chores, basket making, and more; preserving foods; Scherenschnitte: the art of German paper cutting; and Fraktur: the art of German folk art and calligraphy. Guest teachers include Donna Selfridge Spangler, Brenda Miller, and members of the Susquehanna Spinners and Weavers Guild including Libby Beiler.
