USTA preparing for move to Snyder County

LEWISBURG — SELINSGROVE — The Union-Snyder Transportation Alliance will be making a move from Lewisburg to Selinsgrove this year.

Plans have been four years in the making and appear to be on course as bids are solicited this month for a covered structure to house 12 vehicles at the site of the former CareerLink office at 713 Bridge St.

The plan to relocate USTA began a few years ago due to a space crunch at 1610 Industrial Blvd. in Lewisburg.

The counties secured $3 million in federal and state grants to build a new 14,000-square-foot office building and bus garage at the Pawling Station Business Park off Route 522 in Snyder County, but those plans were changed for a less costly alternative that arose when CareerLink services moved to Sunbury.

Moving the USTA offices into the former CareerLink site will provide an added benefit of bringing the agency under the same roof as the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency, which runs the transportation program.

Snyder County commissioners Chairman Joe Kantz said he’s not certain how much the new vehicle storage facility will cost, but estimates it will be about $500,000 or less.

Under the terms of the federal and state grant obtained to build the facility, the work must be completed by July.

Kantz said the 14 USTA staff members and 26 part-time drivers likely will move into the new offices by September.

Established in 1979, USTA provides about 300 rides each day to residents in the two counties.
