The Daily Item

— MIFFLINBURG — The Union County Historical Society Annual John B. Deans Dinner and Program: “Gunsmiths of Union County” will be held Nov. 7 at the Carriage Corner Restaurant, Route 45, Mifflinburg.

Speaker Jeff Spotts, of Buffalo Township, has studied and collected items of local origin. He will discuss gun-making and gunsmiths of Union County, the Kentucky rifle, and how common rifle characteristics came together to form what is now known as the Upper Susquehanna school of gun-making in the area north of Harrisburg from Hazleton in the east, to State College in the west. The program will conclude with information about the men (and rumored to be at least one woman) who worked as gunsmiths in Union County.

The evening opens at 6 p.m. for social time and silent auction, with a chance to bid on some rare real photo postcards of Union County, and two out-of-print books: “Made of Mud” on area stoneware, and “In the Heart of Pennsylvania” on Union County quilts, plus other items of interest. Dinner will begin at 6:30. The buffet includes chicken picatta, carved roast beef, seasoned red potatoes, fancy vegetable medley with cranberries, snap peas, salad, rolls, beverages and angel food cake with strawberries. Cost is $20 per person.

Award presentations, to individuals and organizations for their contributions to the Society and to the community through their preservation and research efforts, will follow dinner.

The program will begin at 7:30.

Prepaid reservations are required by Oct. 31. For more information, contact the Historical Society at (570) 524-8666.
