SUM (Some) Assembly Required

— The Snyder Union Mifflin Child Development (SUMCD) Summer Camp Program sign up are being accepted.

The 2014 Summer Camp program has an exciting new curriculum that focuses on preparing youth for the future, including high school, college, and the work force. Youth need the following skills to be successful: communication and thinking skills, teamwork and leadership skills, self direction, technological skills, professionalism, and ethics. The SUMCD after school and camp programs help youth develop these lifelong skills with an emphasis on the core subject areas (science, math, engineering, technology, social studies, art, reading, language, and physical education) through engaging, fun, intentional, and relevant learning experiences and activities. This summer the following themes will be incorporated into Camp: The Naturalist, The Environmentalist, The Scientist, The Outdoor Recreationist, and The Survivalist. Camp staff have been planning trips and activities that will help children learn while also emphasizing how valuable it is to run, jump, and play with friends. “SUM Assembly Required” is the catch phrase and the staff will help children learn, discover, explore, and grow in the “great outdoors.”

A new program will be instituted this year: a “Counselor in Training” program. The program will be open to any child who has completed fifth, sixth, or seventh grade, and will offer students hands-on trainings in leadership, decision making, and youth development. There will be an application process for interested candidates. The process will include an interview with the camp leader as well as getting references. The youths selected for the CIT program will earn services learning hours and will be given a “Junior Staff” T-shirt to wear. Students can be part of this program for the entire summer or they can just try it out for a week or so.

Since 1985, SUMCD has been providing a School-Age Summer Camp program for elementary age children from early June through late August. Summer Camp is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Union, Snyder, and Mifflin counties for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Call (570) 524-0926 for more information or visit www.sumcd.org.
