Rotary honors three with with Service Above Self award

LEWISBURG — On June 12, the Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary honored seven people who have given of their selves to make this year one to remember with their Service Above Self Award. Union County’s Commissioner Preston Boop, John Showers and Jon Mathias have given their time and energy to plan, promote and participate while running the county.

Boop has been an advocate for agriculture and recycling. He has encouraged Union County Conservation to participate with a planting of 200 trees.

Mathias is the technocrat and business manager and mathematician. He keeps things financially grounded and uses his executive experience gained at JPM to see that things run efficiently. His softer side provides the photography for the website.

Showers is co-chair of the Bicentennial Commission. His imagination has fueled the great bison debate and arrival of the community bisons sponsored by the tireless work of the Union County Foundation.

Shawn McLaughlin, planning director, comes to the position with a degree in recreation and parks management. He has lead the charge to energize marketing and publicity.

John Del Vecchio developed the website and maintains it. It is constantly being updated with events and features.

Cindy Sheesley is the executive administrative assistant to the commissioners in Union County. In addition to county finances and working with auditors, she oversees the souvenir sales and assists in preparing for special events. She reminds to write sales slips, collect taxes and give correct change. The books must balance and the stock must be replaced.

Pamela Mabus has found a new niche in graphic arts. Formerly a zoning officer for Union County, she finds creating and producing brochures, tickets, posters and flyers rewarding.

Without these four and the guidance of the commissioners, this year’s celebration would not be so complete and so professional, creating a memory for all. Nada Gray is pleased to recognize them for their service above self.
