Lunch & Learn Jan. 16: “Democracy and Development in Africa’

— LEWISBURG  — The Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning’s Lunch & Learn program will host a discussion of democracy in Africa at 11 a.m. Jan. 16 at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village at The Village Common, at 6 Tressler Boulevard in Lewisburg.

Berhanu Nega, an economics professor at Bucknell, will lead the informal lecture presentation, “Democracy and Development in Africa: What Informs Western (U.S.) Policymaking on the Continent.”

After teaching at Bucknell in the early 1990s, Nega returned in 1994 to his native Ethiopia. Elected mayor of Addis Ababa in 2005, he was imprisoned by the national government. Released in 2007, he returned to the U.S. to resume teaching economics at Bucknell, trying to show students that issues they read about are not abstractions but impact millions of real people.

Doors open at 11 a.m.; beverages and a light dessert will be provided. Participants may bring their own lunch or purchase a soup-and-sandwich lunch (cup of vegetable soup and a roast beef wrap with cheese, lettuce, tomato) for $6 by contacting the Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning office at (570) 522-0105 or lifelonglearning@bucknell.edu up to 11:30 a.m. of the day prior to the program; payment can be made at the door.

Other Lunch & Learn programs are scheduled for this spring. “Aging and Music Cognition” with Andrea Halpern, psychology professor, will be held Feb. 13 at noon at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village. Lunch is chicken corn chowder and grilled vegetables in a wrap.

“A Bird’s-Eye View of Aging” with Mark Haussmann, biology professor, will be held April 22 at noon at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village. Lunch is lentil soup and ham salad on a croissant.

Tea & Talk

In addition to the Lunch & Learn programs, the Institute will host a series of free informal tea-time programs. Tea & Talk begins at 3:30 p.m., with doors opening at 3 p.m. Each event includes teatime refreshments. Tea & Talk is held in partnership with Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village at The Village Common at 6 Tressler Boulevard in Lewisburg.

The Tea & Talk schedule includes: “Making Space: Art, Technology and Collaboration,” with F. Elaine Williams, theatre professor, on March 4; “Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony: Exploring its many interpretations and permutations from the late-20th century to the present” with Annie Randall, music professor, on March 25; and “The Role of a Master Drummer: Beyond Africa and Jazz,” Phil Haynes, lecturer, on April 3.
