LEWISBURG — On April 27, approximately 180 people from the community gathered at Faith Lutheran Church, in Lewisburg, to package meals to feed local people who are in need of nutritious food. Members of Faith Lutheran Church chaired this event, in partnership with Outreach, Inc, a national organization devoted to education, outreach and feeding disadvantaged and food instable people, both in the United States and in other impoverished nations. During this event, volunteers donated time and money to package nutritionally enhanced macaroni and cheese dinners, which were then taken to local food banks, shelters and other distribution sites. Meals were delivered for distribution from sites in Union, Snyder, Northumberland, Lycoming, Dauphin and Lancaster counties.
Chairperson of the event, Nancy Ard, calls the event “a great success.” “We set a goal of raising $5,000 so that we could package 20,000 meals. But individuals and organizations in the local community were very generous. Between the money raised before the event, and the money donated by those who helped on the day of the event, we were able to raise enough money to package almost 29,000 meals.” Ard states that “each meal costs $.25 to make, so every contribution makes a difference.” With the success of this event, Ard hopes that even more people will be willing to donate time and money for future events, in order to make even more meals, to continue to feed the hungry.
