LEWISBURG — The Susquehanna Valley Spinners and Weavers Guild and Shearer, Jack Smith provided a fiber arts demonstration for the second grade students at the Kelly Elementary School in Lewisburg on April 19. Students had the opportunity to learn how sheep are shorn, and to see firsthand how the wool is processed into yarn or felt. The students were able to view and participate in carding wool, spinning wool into yarn, weaving fabric, and felting soft sculptures. The fiber arts demonstration built upon the curriculum that the second grade students have been studying in their social studies class this year.
The presentation was brought to the school by the Arts and Enrichment Team of the Lewisburg Elementary PSA, a volunteer organization which serves all of elementary students from kindergarten through fifth grade in the Lewisburg School District. The Arts and Enrichment Team believes that bringing members of the local community into the district’s schools to provide programs, performances and enrichment opportunities helps to enhance the students’ educational experience and strengthens the children’s connection to the wonderful area we live in.
