LEWISBURG — Relay For Life of the Lewisburg Area is launching the “One Million Pennies” campaign, a challenge to the local community to collect one million pennies in celebration of reaching one million dollars in fundraising over the past 11 years. With the simple motto of “A Penny A Day Keeps The Cancer Away”, the collection of one million pennies will result in $10,000 toward the American Cancer Society. Relay teams, local businesses and community members all have a chance to participate in this fundraising initiative. Participating Lewisburg businesses and organizations will be displaying collection containers in their stores, churches, restaurants. Relay For Life teams will be collecting pennies at local events, neighborhoods, schools, and fundraisers. Community members can also participate by filling their own 16-ounce containers with pennies — individuals who bring their “One Million Pennies” donations to the Relay For Life event on June 7 will receive a free refillable drink cup in recognition of their participation.
Containers of pennies will be given the following values:
n 16 oz. container (i.e. water bottle)=1,300 pennies=$13
n 1 gallon container (i.e. milk jug)=6,000 pennies=$60
n 5 gallon container (i.e. Culligan water cooler or commercial paint container)=32,000 pennies=$320
“One Million Pennies” will continue until the 2013 Relay For Life event on June 7. For information on how a business or individual can obtain a collection container, contact Relay For Life of the Lewisburg Area at email@example.com. The theme for 2013 Relay for Life is “The Amazing Race to One Million Dollars”. The fundraising goal for this year’s event will be to reach $1,000,000 — a milestone that the Lewisburg Area is close to achieving in its 11th year of Relay For Life. Co-chairs for the 2013 Relay For Life of the Lewisburg Area are Christy Zelechoski and Maria Bhangdia. The 2013 Relay for Life of the Lewisburg Area will begin June 7 at 1 p.m. and ends June 8 at 1 p.m. at Pawling Athletic Complex.
