Wood-chopper dies when tree strikes him

LEWISBURG — A tree-cutting accident near Swartz Road resulted in the death of a Lewisburg area man.

John William Hufnagle, 68, of 495 Swartz Road, died from injuries after a tree struck him Friday afternoon.

Hufnagle was cutting down the tree for firewood at the time of the accident, according to Union County coroner Dominic Adamo.

A post on the Mifflinburg Hose Company Facebook page reported responding to the call along Swartz Road just after 4 p.m.

Hufnagle was a 1963 graduate of Lewisburg High School and served in the Army National Guard from Sept. 22, 1965, until an honorable discharge on Sept. 21, 1971.

He was employed as a tool maker for Lycoming Engines, of Williamsport, for 38 years and was a member of Mifflinburg’s Hillside Bible Church.
