LEWISBURG — Economist Anirban Basu is returning to the Valley Thursday to speak about regional and national economic trends expected to impact local business.
The chairman and chief executive officer of Sage Policy Group, Basu has been the keynote speaker at the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual economic forecast luncheon held at La Primavera restaurant for the past several years.
“He discusses the economy in an entertaining way and I think he’s been spot on,” said Renee Gerringer, the chamber’s director of programs and development.
In 2011, Basu predicted a double-dip recession for the following year but said he anticipates the economy to begin improving within five to six years.
Last week, the U.S. Labor Department reported the unemployment rate had dropped to 7.3 percent, the lowest since 2008, but said was due in large part to the more than 300,000 Americans who had stopped working or looking for a job.
Gerringer said 110 people have registered for the 11:30 a.m. luncheon, which is co-sponsored by Geisinger Health System, Keystone Forging Co., Northumberland National Bank and Coldwell Banker Penn One Real Estate.
