“Snowfest” At R.B. Winter State Park

The Daily Item

— MIFFLINBURG — The 18th annual Snowfest at R.B. Winter State Park will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. Demonstrations, crafts, games, and basic instruction in various outdoor recreational activities are planned for children and adults.

New for this year will be the Geocache Dash which is a fun family-oriented challenge with GPS units based on geocaching that even seasoned ‘cachers’ will enjoy. Challenge yourself to complete the challenge as fast as possible or do it at your own pace and find as many as you can within the time limit. Beginners will start with an introduction to using the GPS units with park naturalist, Tim Morey, and then have time to complete part of the course. Worried about not being the fastest? This challenge will be not only about speed, but also skill-based with a bit of luck thrown in just for fun. Bring your own GPS or borrow one of ours while they last. Families should plan to complete the challenge together as a team.

Also new for 2014 is the “Six Sides of Snow”, a hands on science program with naturalist Kim Lott from Sinnamahoning State Park.

Other planned activities and events include: cross country skiing (Brad Bubb Rentals), ice skating, snow shoeing, ice fishing, historic art of ice harvesting, 3.5 mile race (Mid Penn Trail Blazers), snowmobile safety and rides for kids (Sugar Valley Snow Riders), winter mountain biking (Campus Cycle), RV winter camping (Tear Jerkers RV Club), Broomball, ice carving demonstrations (Victoria House and Vic’s Pub), winter search and rescue using dogs (STRIKE), silent auction, kids crafts, programs, and story hour, winter birds and bird feeding, food concession, fly tying (Trout Unlimited), displays by local environmental organizations, and Smokey Bear will be visiting too.

A finalized schedule of activities will be available at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center on the day of the event. Several activities are snow or ice dependent and may be cancelled or changed if conditions are unsafe are not favorable to the event.
