MIDDLEBURG — The Snyder County commissioners plan to raze the former Children and Youth offices adjacent to the courthouse on West Market Street.
The county purchased the building and land many years ago with an eye on possible future expansion. The courthouse houses court-related offices, the register and recorder, treasurer, tax assessment, commissioners and veterans affairs.
The adjacent building has been vacant for the past few years since Children and Youth Services relocated to Bridge Street in Selinsgrove. The vacant building isn’t handicapped-accessible and lacks other ideal features for office use, so the commissioners decided to demolish it and create a green space.
The county will retain the property in the event it’s needed for expansion in future years, board Chairman Joe Kantz said.
Another project on the horizon is to convert a second-floor multipurpose room in the courthouse into a court hearing room. If approved, the project would be paid for with court-related funds.
