Snyder County DUI Hunter Award honorees announced

MIDDLEBURG — In a move to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and recognize local police commitment to DUI enforcement, Snyder County District Attorney Michael Piecuch is honoring two area officers.

This year’s recipients of the Snyder County DUI Hunter Award are state Trooper Craig Magnuson of Selinsgrove and Middleburg patrol officer David Shaffer.

They had the highest number of drunk driving arrests resulting in conviction in 2012 among the overall 129 convictions.

Magnuson had a total of 20 DUI convictions and Shaffer secured 11 convictions last year that resulted in sentences of probation, jail or treatment court. They each received a plaque and letter of commendation.

State Trooper Nathan Wetzel received an honorable mention for his 19 DUI convictions.

“Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol remains a top public safety issue for Snyder County,” Piecuch said. “We need dedicated officers to find these impaired drivers and to get them off our roads.”

The annual award was started by President Judge Michael H. Sholley several years ago when he served as district attorney and was continued by Piecuch who took office in 2010.
