MIDDLEBURG — Starting in 2016, Snyder County’s 21 tax collectors could face financial penalties of up to $3,000 a year for turning in late monthly reports.
While most tax collectors are prompt in turning in monthly financial reports and deposits, the county Board of Commissioners said Thursday they wanted to improve accountability and set a late fee as allowed under the law.
“It hurts cash flow when they’re not in on time,” county Board Chairman Joe Kantz said.
The decision to implement the late fee was approved along with a new salary scheduled for 2016-2019 that provides a 5 cent increase for each real estate tax bill collected in each of the four years, from the current $2.25 per bill.
The late fee for the first six business days after a monthly report is due will be up to $20 and $10 for each following day the report is late. The maximum monthly late fee the county can collect from a tax collector is $250.
